No. General anesthesia is not a requirement for egg collection. The egg collection procedure is performed under a heavy sedative so that you will be asleep and not feel anything at all but you won’t have any of the nasty side effects associated with general anesthesia. After the procedure, you are immediately put on IV fluids to avoid dehydration and begin to flush the medication out of your system. The effects of sedation begin to fade away quickly and within an hour, you should be feeling back to normal. You will be checked over by a professional to ensure that you are okay, provided something to eat and drink and then you will be discharged with aftercare advice and information.
