Cytomegalovirus, or CMV, is a virus that can be transferred to a developing fetus before giving birth.

CMV is a common herpes virus group that spreads via bodily fluids. That can also include chickenpox, mono (infectious mononucleosis) and cold sores.  

Most women who carry the CMV whether pregnant or not, will not develop any symptoms of the infection and may not even know they carry it. People who show signs of an active CMV infection usually experience fever, lethargy or feeling tired like mild discomfort generally connected with the simple cold or the flu, and show no lasting effects once they recover. During infection, the virus is passed through body fluids. That means it can be through exposure to urine, saliva, blood, tears, breast milk, and semen.
